For students ages 6-10 years old

Touchstone Community School's experiential elementary program inspires curiosity, empowers learners, and invites engagement with the natural world.

How to Apply

Enrollment open for the 2023-2024 school year!

Our elementary students explore, wonder, investigate, get messy, and participate in serious play. Students are given ample opportunities to explore their interests and make choices about their learning while also being guided through explicit instruction in core academic subjects.

A Day in our Elementary Program

An elementary student's day opens with morning meeting.  Students look foward to greeting their peers,  playing games, and engaging in imaginative and/or athletic play.

Whether indoors or outside, students receive rigorous instruction in math and literacy, including explicit Orton-Gillingham based instruction. Elementary students enthusiastically participate in hands-on activities in science and social studies, and they explore the natural world, play games, create art, and ask questions.

Elementary students have two recesses each day.  They also participate in stewardship activities, and have art, physical education, and music.

At its heart, the Elementary School at Touchstone is a joyful learning community that supports students as they grow individually and as members of a group.

  • Outdoor Learning

Elementary students at Touchstone love exploring nature. This includes learning in their outdoor classrooms, exploring the woods and nature trail, and place-based learning at Touchstone's Wildwood Island Campus.

As students explore the ecosystems, discover  characteristics and habitats of native animals, and deepen their appreciation for the outdoors, they gain a greater understanding of their place within the natural world.

  • Social and Emotional Learning

Elementary teachers support individual student growth and independence, while helping each child understand what it means to be a member of a community. Through conversations, projects, literature, role playing, games, and teachable moments, the importance of respecting each other is emphasized.

Children learn to value teamwork, collaboration, negotiation, problem solving, self-regulation, and standing up for themselves and others.
